Me with my dogs of the past
***This particular collage also has a few of our past pups with their families.
..........Kids and Dogs........
Don't assume all dogs are the same. Just as with humans, they are unique to themselves.
If you don't know a dog, don't assume it's friendly or even LIKES kids... on the other side of the coin, don't assume the dog is a bad dog.
...........Don't assume, ....period!
These pictures show how loving a family dog can be when raised right. Ours are taught to tolerate, to love, to trust ME to handle any situation that may come up. I hug them, I put pressure on them when getting up, standing or moving around them, I touch and hold their feet, ears and touch around their eye area. It's not only desensitizing them for kids' unexpected touching/grabbing, but also allows me to freely examine them at any time!
A 2 for 1 training tool!
So they love, crave, and yes at times tolerate the attention of their kids just as all loving animals do with their young, us humans included. (I'm sure Zeke was just lovingly tolerating or "putting up with" getting dressed in that costume LOL)
A healthy dog won't attack their own pups, just as they won't attack the children they love. Dogs and kids both, should be taught how to treat each other with love, respect, and yes tolerance.
You might be surprised how many people don't understand how that works!
SO
Teach your dog well,
Teach your child well.
It's a winning combination
Grandson was still learning to be nice, notice he's still in diapers as he's pulling Zeke's tail...the dogs just ignore it, it's up to us to teach the kids to be nice to animals.
This is a perfect example of good dog behavior, bad kid behavior. This is where teaching the dogs to tolerate is paying off.
***BTW, the child is now 5 and hasn't teased or pulled, poked or otherwise tormented the dogs since he was about 3 or 4.... Teaching the dogs AND the kids is ALWAYS the best recipe for success!
Zeke is the clown of the bunch :)
Gunther and Elsa play looks a little rough but it's all in fun LOL
April 2015
The dogs are never allowed to discipline the kids, they are taught to tolerate,... and the kids are never allowed to poke, pull, prod or tease. .. It all starts young...... It's a winning combination
Oldie but Goodie.... Yva, Kira as a pup,
and Sammy about 6 yrs old here
These pups are venturing out of the bed a lot and are ready to go to their "big kid" area outside.
aka "Pinny"
We can't forget Pinny! She's a permanent fixture around here and all the pups get to know her as they grow. She loves us, the pups, the kids, and the cat too! She's beautiful to watch when she runs with excitement as she is a Polish Arabian.... Just beautiful!
Spring of 2023... She's gotten so OLD! We don't ride anymore, I'll not ask her to carry me as her muscle mass isn't the same and my body weight isn't the same as when we were both younger (she's 28 and I'm in 60s). But she's still here, still happy, and even throws her 'attitude' at times when I'm late with her special senior feed LOL!
Getting older isn't easy on any of us, but at 28, I still think she's a "real looker!" and she's safe right here with us until she decides it's her time to say the final good bye.
Yva (retired since 2013) is getting up there in age, but she still has so much patience, not only with the pups but with the grandson as well. She's just an amazing family dog! ......Perfect example of a really good dog - and a child still learning. He's still learning to stop bugging them when he should....
RIP Yva You gave us 13 wonderful years!! Love you forever
** Note: Saying good bye to dear friends is never easy. It breaks a heart every time ....
'Old Souls Leave Permanent Memories In Ones Heart'
Lady We had to make a very hard decision to say goodbye to Lady after last years snow. She was my son's dog when he was just a young boy (he was 12 when he BEGGED for this adorable little bundle of fur that a woman had a box full of at the local park. Adorable little "OOPS breed" puppy"! (YIKES! An OOPS litter is NEVER tested so I knew the gamble on her health was HUGE!! ) But we were blessed with a pretty healthy dog most of her life. My son was 27 when we had to say good bye to her due to cancer in her last year. She was a fantastic pet, loved by the entire family. She filled our home with love and laughter for 15 years!
We miss her dearly. RIP dear Lady
Yva came to us when we first got our home. It had been one rough ride for a couple of years before that, and she came to fill our hearts and home with gentle love and made us feel safe with her devotion and protective side towards "her" kids and home. For 13 years she was so kind, sweet, loving and protective towards all the "littles", she became known as Grandma Yva as she aged...... and we miss her so!
RIP my sweet sweet Yva 2008 -2021
Zeke was the best friend, playmate, protector of the home and kids we could ever have asked for. It's been a few moths now since we said good bye. He passed right here at home, in his own bed, at the old age of 13. I still haven't been able to bring myself to move his bed and blanket out from my desk area. I still think of him and smile when I have to move his things away from my office chair wheels as I often did daily when he has still here with us.
RIP sweet Zeke. 2009 - 2022 You were one of a kind and we all miss you more than words can describe.
Princess In 2023 we lost another old friend. Our cat of 19 years passed away this spring. The only other one that was/is older is my old mare, Pinny, who is 28 yrs old now in 2023 and showing her old age.
Princess was a gift to my youngest daughter when my daughter was just 3 yr old. "Lucky Princess" was as sweet as could be to us yet tough as nails when needed! She ruled our property, even chasing off stray dogs and protecting the babies from outsiders LOL! She and my horse were great friends inside the barn and out. She taught the pups about cats without being mean about it.
One of a kind - She will be missed forever.
RIP Lucky Princess, we miss you
Even preparing for a loss can be hard! The only other one that was/is older than our dear Princess is my old mare, Pinny, who is 28 yrs old now and showing her old age. She will stay with us as long as she chooses, I refuse to simply "get rid of her" as many might suggest of a horse, but that has never, and never will be, an option to me as long as she is happy and comfortable. Remember to not judge things by looks, she acts young, but she really isn't, many horses never even reach her age! Her loss of muscle mass is the only thing that shows her old age, just as will happen to many of us when we reach our 80s and 90s if we're lucky enough to live that long even. Special care is taken for her, special feed, special heavy blankets for winter, she has a private 'at will' stall, etc. She will receive the special care until she is ready to say good bye. She's a close and dear friend that deserves to be loved, cared for and defended as long as she chooses to remain here. To us, riding wasn't the only bond we had, we have a strong friendship as well.
